What happens before the surface treatment?

In order to meet the industrial requirements for wood surfaces in the best possible way, an analysis of the initial condition is required first. 

During wood preparation and production of the workpieces, upstream processing steps are decisive for the subsequent finish and surface result.

The processing steps required to produce a wooden plank as a starting workpiece are documented below.

Trimming

Trimming involves cutting off the edge of the tree using a saw cut. The aim of the cut is to remove the bark and the directly adjacent cambium layer from the sawn timber.

Dressing

The wood product, e.g. plank, cannot yet be processed after the edging cut. On the one hand, the surface structure is rough. On the other hand, the still warped surfaces must be leveled. In this step, angularity is also created between the individual sides.

Planing

The planing process is now required to achieve a defined thickness/height. An already flat wood surface is placed on the planing table and the opposite surface is then processed in one or more planing processes. 

Cutting to size

Once the desired thickness or height is achieved, the product can now be cut to the final length and width dimensions. The sawn timber is now prepared for brushing processes such as structuring.

Wood preparation

To prepare wooden workpieces for surface processing, several upstream procedures may be required.

Texturing wood

To create textures on wooden surfaces, the softer earlywood components are brushed out whilst the harder latewood remains intact, forming the desired relief-like texture.

Grinding wood

Whether sanding, fine sanding or intermediate lacquer sanding. Whether a simple, flat surface or a complex, uneven surface - Osborn helps with the sanding of wood.

Stripping paint from wood

Due to weathering and other external influences, lacquered surfaces are subject to flaking and peeling over time. Before applying a new layer of paint, all residues must be completely stripped of residues. Compared to other methods, brushing allows you to tap into a variety of benefits.

Cleaning wood

Especially in exterior applications, wooden surfaces are exposed to weathering, resulting in undesired discoloration and decomposition of the surface.

Applying paint, oil, and sealers to wood

Texturing or grinding is often followed by a variety of finishing steps. Surface coating is usually applied to protect wooden surfaces from mechanical damage, and to achieve the desired look and feel.

Dust off wood

A lot of dust and sawdust is produced during woodworking. A clean, dust-free surface is essential for the further processing of wooden workpieces.
